Aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) are the professionals responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing aircraft to ensure they operate safely and efficiently. Technicians maintain nearly every component of an aircraft, including airframes, engines, landing gear, flight control systems, electrical systems, and avionics components. These professionals are commonly referred to as A&P mechanics after earning the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant certificates.
The Aviation Maintenance Technology Program at Cape Cod Community College prepares students for careers as certified aircraft maintenance technicians. The program is delivered at the Plymouth Aviation Center, a dedicated aviation training facility located at Plymouth Municipal Airport. Through a combination of classroom instruction and extensive hands-on laboratory experience, students develop the technical knowledge, practical skills, and professional habits required in the aviation maintenance industry.
The curriculum is structured around the three areas of instruction defined by the Federal Aviation Administration: General, Airframe, and Powerplant. Upon completion of the program, graduates are prepared to pursue FAA certification as Airframe and Powerplant mechanics and enter the aviation workforce.
The program also emphasizes professionalism, safety, teamwork, and responsibility. Students learn to work in accordance with industry standards, federal regulations, and the ethical expectations of the aviation maintenance profession.
Attendance at an AMT Information Session is required for all applicants to the program.

The aviation industry continues to experience strong demand for skilled aircraft maintenance technicians. Commercial airlines, cargo carriers, corporate flight departments, maintenance repair organizations (MROs), and aircraft manufacturers rely on certified technicians to maintain and repair increasingly complex aircraft systems.
According to national labor market data, employment opportunities exist in a variety of aviation maintenance fields including:
- Aircraft maintenance technician (A&P mechanic)
- Avionics technician
- Aircraft inspector
- Aircraft structures technician
- Maintenance repair organization (MRO) technician
- Aviation maintenance supervisor or manager
Graduates of the Aviation Maintenance Technology program are prepared for entry-level technician positions in aircraft maintenance and repair. With additional experience and certifications, technicians may advance into leadership roles such as lead technician, quality inspector, maintenance supervisor, or director of maintenance.
Upon successful completion of the Aviation Maintenance Technology program, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate the technical knowledge required to inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair aircraft systems and components.
- Apply aviation maintenance practices in accordance with FAA regulations, manufacturer documentation, and industry safety standards.
- Perform maintenance tasks associated with aircraft structures, systems, and powerplants using proper tools, equipment, and procedures.
- Diagnose mechanical and system malfunctions and implement appropriate maintenance actions.
- Communicate effectively in technical and professional aviation environments.
- Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and ethical conduct consistent with the standards of the aviation maintenance profession.
- Prepare for and pursue FAA Airframe and Powerplant certification.
