The Sustainable Design & Manufacturing Certificate is intended to prepare students for entry level positions in design or engineering with an emphasis on sustainability. Students will learn key concepts in product design and quality. In addition, students will learn about sustainability in product design, facility management, and technical management. Students will gain the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and implement solutions that minimize environmental impact and promote long-term resource management. Students will be prepared for professional careers in various industries focused on creating a more environmentally responsible future. 

The program is structured to be completed within one year with careful advisor assisted selection of the core courses. In addition to providing a pathway directly to the workforce, the certificate can be used as a direct pathway to the Advanced Manufacturing and Automation Associate in Science program at Cape Cod Community College.

The Sustainable Design & Manufacturing Certificate provides the skills and knowledge necessary for entry level roles in business, nonprofit and social organizations interested in sustainability. Common job titles for certificate graduates include Environmental Engineering Technologists and Technicians, Sustainability Manager, Mechanical Drafters, Industrial Engineering Technologists and Technicians.

Integrate sustainable practices into facility and operations management by applying principles of green building, energy efficiency, and environmental systems to reduce resource consumption and environmental impact. 

Apply systems thinking and life cycle analysis to evaluate and improve organizational strategies, supply chains, and product designs for long-term sustainability and stakeholder equity. 

Demonstrate proficiency in sustainable product design and engineering by utilizing CAD tools, additive manufacturing, and design-for-sustainability principles to optimize product life cycles and manufacturability. 

Evaluate and implement quality and process improvement methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, and Total Quality Management to enhance operational efficiency and support sustainable outcomes. 

Communicate technical and sustainability insights effectively to diverse audiences through professional writing, data storytelling, and stakeholder engagement strategies. 

Lead and collaborate in cross-functional teams by applying ethical decision-making, negotiation, and project management skills to drive sustainable innovation and organizational change.
