Local General Education and Institutional Student Learning Outcomes

College Meeting affirmed that AA students fulfill the requirements of MassTransfer to earn the AA degree at CCCC as outlined in the College catalog.

Respecting the Department of Higher Education (DHE) and the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education (CIHE) of the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) standards', Cape Cod Community College has approved the following Institutional Student Learning Outcomes. It is envisioned that as a result of successfully completing an associate degree program at Cape Cod Community College the graduate will have achieved the following eight outcomes.

In order for a course to meet General Education criteria, three of the eight Institutional Student Learning Outcomes must be assessed within the course. (Approved by College Meeting May 5, 2026)

ISLO #1: Critical Thinking: The ability to engage in clear and reasoned thinking, involving the systematic analysis and evaluation of information, arguments, and ideas. This skill involves questioning assumptions, identifying patterns, analyzing evidence, and drawing conclusions based on logical reasoning and factual data.

1.1 Evaluate and critique arguments or propositions in academic or professional contexts.

1.2 Solve complex problems using logical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making.

1.3 Identify assumptions and biases in various arguments or scenarios.

1.4 Develop well-structured, reasoned arguments with supporting evidence.

ISLO #2: Creative Thinking: The ability to generate innovative ideas, solutions, or artistic expressions. This involves thinking outside conventional boundaries, making novel connections, embracing originality, and expressing ideas in unique ways.

2.1 Demonstrate the ability to generate original solutions to complex problems.

2.2 Produce work (projects, designs, reports, artworks) that exhibit original thinking and uniqueness.

2.3 Engage in activities or produce works that express imaginative, artistic, or novel ideas.

2.4 Show the ability to think divergently by exploring multiple possible solutions or ideas in response to a given problem or prompt.

2.5 Adapt existing ideas or methods to new contexts and improvise effectively when faced with novel situations or challenges.

ISLO #3: Communication: The capacity to effectively convey and exchange information, ideas, and emotions through written, verbal, and non-verbal means. This includes listening actively, expressing thoughts clearly and coherently, and tailoring the message to the audience.

3.3 Demonstrate active listening skills in group discussions and feedback sessions.

ISLO #4: Ethical and Social Awareness: The understanding and appreciation of ethical principles and social responsibilities. This includes recognizing and analyzing ethical issues, making decisions based on ethical considerations, understanding the impact of actions on society and the environment, and advocating for ethical practices.

4.1 Analyze ethical dilemmas and make decisions based on ethical principles and social considerations.

4.2 Demonstrate understanding of social responsibility in personal and professional actions.

4.3 Engage in activities or projects that promote social welfare or environmental sustainability.

4.4 Reflect on and discuss the ethical implications of professional or academic work.

ISLO #5: Technology: The proficiency and skill in using specialized tools, techniques, and processes relevant to a specific field or industry. This includes adapting to new technologies, troubleshooting technical issues, and applying technical knowledge to solve practical problems.

5.1 Demonstrate competency in using industry-specific software or tools.

5.2 Apply technical skills to solve real-world problems or complete projects.

ISLO #6: Global Perspective: The awareness and understanding of global issues, diverse cultures, and international dynamics. This involves recognizing the interconnectedness of global systems, appreciating cultural diversity, and applying a global lens to problem-solving and decision-making.

6.2 Participate in projects, programs, or collaborations that require the use of a global lens to problem-solve and make decisions.

6.3 Demonstrate knowledge of international standards or practices in their field of study.

ISLO #7: Multicultural Understanding: Recognizing, understanding, and appreciating cultural diversity and demonstrating an inclusive approach towards different cultural, ethnic, and social groups. This includes the ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and to understand the impact of cultural differences on various aspects of life and work.

7.1 Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with people from diverse backgrounds.

7.2 Demonstrate understanding of different cultural practices and perspectives in coursework or projects.

7.3 Reflect on and respect diverse viewpoints in group settings or discussions.

ISLO #8: Quantitative & Computational Skills: The ability to understand, analyze, and use quantitative data effectively in everyday life and professional situations. This involves skills in numerical computation, interpreting and reasoning with numbers, understanding graphs and tables, and making decisions based on quantitative information.

8.1 Apply quantitative reasoning to solve problems in various contexts.

8.2 Interpret and analyze data presented in graphs, tables, or charts to draw conclusions or make informed decisions.

8.3 Apply mathematical concepts and techniques appropriately in different scenarios, such as budgeting, statistical analysis, or scientific research.

8.4 Critically evaluate the validity and relevance of quantitative information in academic, media, or professional reports.

8.5 Clearly and accurately present quantitative information through written or oral communication, using appropriate visual aids such as graphs or charts.

Definition of ISLO Assessment

CCCC defines assessment of the ISLOs as the process of systematically gathering evidence of student learning from multiple and diverse sources. The College will use this evidence to determine the level at which students demonstrate proficiency in the ISLOs and whether that level of proficiency is appropriate for the community college graduate. These determinations will help the institution improve learning experiences for students. (Approved by College Meeting May 9, 2011)
