This interdisciplinary course explores what it means to inhabit a place responsibly, integrating perspectives from Western and Indigenous traditions. Through the study of texts, landscapes, and ecosystems, students will investigate the histories and interactions shaping Penikese Island, while addressing questions of right relation to land and community. The program combines seminar discussions, hands-on labor activities (e.g., beach cleanup, land management), and self-governance exercises to foster connections between intellectual inquiry, physical engagement, and collaborative decision-making. Participants will conclude by presenting their insights through a community event, sharing lessons learned from this immersive experience with the broader college community.
