BST103: Medical Terminology

Medical terminology is the study of the principles of medical word building to help the student develop the extensive medical vocabulary used in health care occupations. Students receive a thorough grounding in basic medical terminology through a study of root words, prefixes and suffixes. The study focuses on correct pronunciation, spelling and use of medical terms. Anatomy, physiology, and pathology of disease are discussed yet no previous knowledge of these topics is necessary.

BST104: Introduction to Microsoft Word

This course focuses on using Microsoft Word to create business documents and develop core-level competencies using Microsoft Office Specialist guidelines. Students create memos, letters, simple reports, and tables. The course includes mastering the keyboard, building proofreading skills and utilizing speed development drills to increase speed and accuracy. 

BST110: Computer Applications

Students learn how to use a Windows-based personal computer in various business settings. A lab/lecture environment is used to enable students to learn the Windows operating system and Microsoft Office for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation graphics. Students are introduced to the software and then progress through various challenging assignments, including integrating applications. Basic concepts in Internet usage, including electronic mail, are an integral part of the course.  Students enrolled in this course are expected to enter with the ability to type 30 wpm accurately.

BST202: Standard Office Procedures

Students prepare for immediate and long-term success as administrative assistants in physical and remote offices. Emphasis is placed on developing interpersonal, time management and organizational skills, critical thinking, improving communication and technological competence, and developing troubleshooting skills. Students learn to schedule appointments, handle mail, use professional telephone etiquette, prepare correspondence, set up meetings, and make travel arrangements. This course prepares students for the Microsoft Office Outlook certification exam.

BST203: Medical Office Procedures

Students prepare for immediate and long-term success as administrative assistants in a medical office environment. The course includes the following: an overview of the healthcare industry, client/patient relations and communication, health information management, medical practice management, and professional workplace behavior. Students acquire skills in a medical office software package and explore ethical/legal issues in modern medicine.

BST205: Medical Coding

Students learn the current medical coding practices used for third-party billing. ICD-10-CM and CPT and HCPCS II coding, as well as legal issues relating to medical record keeping are covered. This is the first of three courses preparing students for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Exam.

BST206: Advanced Medical Coding

Students continue their mastery of diagnostic and procedural coding through complex case studies and use of authentic medical records. Students are introduced to International Classification of Diseases ICD-10 CM and other diagnosis coding systems such as DSM-V. Code auditing for regulatory compliance is emphasized. This is the second of three courses preparing students for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Exam.

BST209: Pharmacology for Medical Coding

This course covers pharmacology basics as they relate to the duties of a medical coder. This course includes the study of drugs and their respective actions, dosage and administration, and the adverse effects associated with drugs. This course prepares students for the pharmacology content on the Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC).

BST210: Medical Billing

This course provides students with a focused and in-depth understanding of the core principles and practices of medical billing within the healthcare industry. Designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career as a medical biller, this course provides the essential knowledge and skills required to accurately process and manage medical claims, adhere to regulatory requirements, and optimize revenue for healthcare providers. Students will explore real-world challenges and solutions in the field of healthcare billing. This course prepares students for the Certified Professional Biller (CPB) Exam.

BST220: Advanced Word Processing Application

Students learn proficiency using many of the advanced functions and special features of a comprehensive word processing package. Course content includes: tabs, print styles and sizes; macros; data manipulation; basic mathematical computations; advanced editing and formatting features; custom document elements; special text features like outline, columns, forms, merges; and graphic elements. Managing document options and setting are also covered. BST110 and BST220 cover all the material for the Microsoft Office Specialist Word Expert Certification exam.

BST225: Microsoft® Excel for Business Applications

Students gain an advanced understanding of the Microsoft Excel environment by completing a variety of exercises designed to develop mastery of the principle features of Excel used in business. Students create, manage, and distribute professional workbooks for a variety of specialized purposes and situations as well as customize the Excel environment to meet project needs and to enhance productivity. This course covers the material for the Microsoft Office User Specialist Excel Expert exam.

BST250: Database Applications

Students acquire an in-depth, hands-on understanding of a PC-based relational database. Using Microsoft Access, students create and edit tables, forms, and reports; sort, query and graph data; and attach, import and export data to/from other applications. Data normalization techniques are studied. Students, working individually and in teams, design and implement database applications. This course prepares students for the Microsoft Access User Specialist exam.

BST261: Business Technology Cooperative Work Experience

The student works in an approved Business office for 150 hours to gain practical training as a capstone experience. This course may be repeated once for credit. Limited to students enrolled in a Business Technology degree or certificate program. Students should have already completed at least 9 credits of Business Technology courses. Approval of the Business Technology program coordinator or Business Department chair is required.
